Oh my, we don't do a whole lot in any one day but we seem to be busy enough.
On Saturday we hijacked Ricky to take us out to the museum. I found it quite odd that it is located several kilometres out of town but the tour guide there told us they opened it on the farm where the artifacts were found. This museum has about 2000 pieces including pottery, jewelery, funerary urns petroglyhs, and tools. Most of these pieces were dug up while preparing the land for planting. They are housed in an old brick tobacco drying shed. There is also a money museum at the same location which was very interesting, not to mention air conditioned. In Nicaragua a whole new issue of money is printed every time a new president is elected. He apparently wants to get rid of reminders of the old president so chooses whose pictures will go on the new money. So far, though, only one president put his own picture on a bill.
Our guide said that this is an oak tree. |
In the afternoon John, the owner of our hotel, drove us out to an old monestary that he bought and is turning into a hostel. It is not really an old monestary but just is not used as a monestary anymore. There are 4 buildings on the 40 acre property thet he bought. One building is now his home, one is a meeting room and cafeteria and the other 2 are for rooms and dorms. His property fronts on the beach and has lots of different fruit trees.

He has a group of 15 people coming in a couple of days and a big push is on to get it ready in time.
Oh, shocking news!! On our way back from the monestary, John told us that three of the staff from our hotel are in jail! Mario, Juan and Maria were arrested for buying hot shoes. I guess Juan is horribly upset because this is the first time he has done something to tarnish his reputation. We really like Mario and Juan so we went to the police station to see if we could visit them and take a picture of them in jail. The police would not let us in. They said to come back tomorrow. Somehow they managed to get out for the night and have to go back tomorrow to sign some papers. And much to our disappointment they were never in a cell but only spent their time in the back garden. Really does not make for a fun picture, though we did happen to be passing by when they were there to sign their papers

On Sunday, Jesinia, who also works at the hotel and did not get into trouble, invited us to visit at her house. Her husband Angel and her daughter Tatiana came to get us and it was a really hot, sunny, 20 minute walk.
Once we got there they showed us around and we met their older daughter, Nidia. They have a cashew tree, a pear tree, bananas and avocados. They also have chickens which was not something Eileen was happy about. Eileen was finding the heat too much to bear with her very thick hair so she covinced Jesinia to cut it for her.

We were served a light lunch of home made tortillas with natural sour cream and cheese. Very yummy!
